Born in or around 1844, Alice was the third of William Walden Carter and Martha Nelson’s approximately six children.
Her older sister Lucy Elizabeth married Samuel Melville Withers shortly after the end of the Civil War, but died nine years later, leaving four young children. Alice married Samuel Withers in November of that year, becoming the step-mother of her sister’s children. Around 1878, she gave birth to her own child, named Betty, perhaps after her deceased sister.
Alice Withers died in 1880. The cause of death was recorded as “spasms.”
According to accounts on ancestry.com, Samuel Withers would marry two more times and live until 1936, when he was 91 years old.
